![]() Dead or Alive 5 doesn't have a thriving online community on console either, in my experience, but I would get challenges occasionally, rather than not at all on PC. Had Last Round launched with an online component, I strongly doubt that matchmaking would be this much of an issue. I don't know what rodent-powered servers Koei Tecmo uses to connect players, but the connectivity is outrageous. ![]() I found exactly one match, which subsequently crashed the game. I searched for matches for well over an hour, across multiple game sessions throughout a week. Playing through practice and single-player modes with challenges turned on did nothing to alleviate the waiting. Searching for opponents takes ages, with no feedback whatsoever from the game, save for the loading icon. If you're new and hoping to break into the Dead or Alive community with Last Round, don't. If you've been playing Last Round alone since launch, the odds are good that you'll still be playing alone. Koei Tecmo finally released the online portion of the game's multiplayer after months of delays and troubleshooting, but the system is so poorly implemented that it doesn't add anything of value to the game. Last Round's greatest weakness is its utterly weak online multiplayer. Not only does the game offer a massive amount of sexy and quirky DLC costumes for its cast of fighters, but it also features a photo mode during Watch Mode, allowing you to take all sorts of silly screenshots.ĭead or Alive 5: Last Round gives the PC community a new and well-rounded fighting game, but the release is a flawed one. While Last Round polishes and tightens the series' gameplay, it's not above fan service, either. Raidou, the villain from the original Dead or Alive, also makes his return as a hard-hitting cyborg ninja.ĭead or Alive is well-known for its busty cast of female fighters, as well as the amount of detail that developer Team Ninja puts into the physics of said bosoms. Honoka is a pink-haired schoolgirl with a hodgepodge fighting style that includes moves from most of the other fighters in the game. Last Round also introduces two new characters to the fighting roster. In fact, the mechanics are similar enough that several Virtual Fighter characters, such as Akira Yuki and Sarah Bryant, guest star in Dead or Alive 5 with their abilities preserved relatively faithfully. ![]() It's a unique system that gives Dead or Alive 5: Last Round its own fun, cinematic flavor.ĭead or Alive shares similar inputs and mechanics with Virtua Fighter, but has more lenient timing, faster paced combat, and a greater emphasis on juggles. You can aim the camera to blast your target in that direction ideally, you will aim for danger zones or stage transitions for extra damage. These zones are easier to take advantage of when used in conjunction with a fighter's Power Blow (special launch attacks that are only available when a character has low health). Special regions in most stages trigger a cinematic event that deals heavy damage to a fighter who gets knocked into them. Like The King of Fighters XIII: Steam Edition ($19.99 at Humble Bundle) (Opens in a new window), Dead or Alive's combat may seem simple at first, but mastering the systems underneath the game's hood is both daunting and extremely rewarding.ĭead or Alive 5 goes one step further by including expanding Danger Zones and hazards. More importantly, they can also be used to counter an attempted hold. Throws are easily defeated by basic strikes, but they are effective when used against a defensive opponent. ![]() Throws are your classic fighting game grab attack. Holds catch and negate incoming strikes, and damage the attacker. Punches and kicks make the bulk of your offense. Last Round utilizes a rock-paper-scissor, or triangle-style, fighting engine. If ever there was a cautionary example about the importance of online play for a competitive fighting game, Dead or Alive 5: Last Round for PC is it. Online matchmaking rarely works, and the online community is virtually nonexistent as a result. What does, unfortunately, is shoddy online connectivity. This version lacks some of the bells and whistles of the current-gen console ports, but this doesn't radically detract from the game. Last Round offers energetic combat, high-flying juggles, spectacular stage transitions and hazards, and the chestiest roster to date.
